The “Scoop” on Vitamin D
New studies have shown a link between Vitamin D and optimal function of many organs and tissues in the body, including the cardiovascular system, affecting blood pressure, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, musculoskeletal system and our immune system to name a few.
It may also be helpful in reducing strokes and certain types of cancer as well as the common cold.
Living in Wisconsin means our levels of Vitamin D drop dramatically in the winter. A level of at least 32 ng/ml is considered therapeutic; to know what your level is have it checked by your Dr.
Although older studies indicated possibilities of Vitamin D “toxicity” newer studies show that 2,000 units a day during the winter months (Oct-March) in the Midwest is not only safe but beneficial.
Before starting a regimen of Vitamin D talk with your pharmacist and/or Doctor. All Aurora pharmacies now carry 2,000 ng/ml tablets.
It is possible to get small amounts of Vitamin D in our foods but not nearly enough to make up for the deficit we experience in the winter months.
Thanks in large part to studies & information gathered by Dr. Whitcomb, a physician at Aurora Sinai hospital, Milwaukee, Aurora Health Care is the first hospital system nationwide to endorse & encourage the use of supplemental Vitamin D to all its patients.
For more information Google “Vitamin D campaign, Aurora” to read about the promotion throughout Aurora or The Wisconsin Medical Journal, “Vitamin D Status” by Binkley, 2007.
I also will have several articles available in church and in my office for anyone to read.
