Dear Church Family,

Because in Sept. we observe Prostate Cancer awareness week I would like to address the topic of Prostate health.  As we read in 1 Cor. 6:19-20 “… your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who dwells within you…you are not your own you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” One way to do this is to pay attention to our bodies and do all we can to keep them healthy.

What can I do to protect myself? There are several things we can do to care for our health. Research has shown that a high fat diet and fat distribution in the upper body are risk factors for prostate cancer. First in 1996 the American Cancer Society began recommending a diet with a high percentage of plant based foods, including fruits,  vegetables, legumes(beans) and whole grains, limited intake of meat and other animal products and balancing calorie intake with physical activity. I know many of you eat out almost daily but you can still choose healthy foods. I have lists available for many fast food restaurants and even ethnic restaurants to help you select the healthy choices. Second, all men over 40 years of age should have a physician examine their prostate each year, after age 50 many doctors recommend also having a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test each year. See your Dr .if you experience changes in urination or any unusual discomfort. Third Selenium may protect against advanced prostate cancer. Research shows that men with the highest selenium levels had a 65% lower risk of developing advanced prostate cancer. Good sources of selenium include whole grains and other seeds.

Remember, take care of that “temple”, its price is beyond measure.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me and don’t hesitate to call your Dr.
